Making Waves supports and exhibits pioneering work by international talent and local independent film-makers; maximising opportunities to develop skills in film-making, distribution and events.
Now in its fifth year, the Making Waves Short Film Competition 2016 will be open for entries from Friday April 28th.
Film makers are encouraged to enter the Best International Film, Best National Film and Best Local Film categories with winners’ films being screened during the Making Waves Film Festival week and at partner film festivals.
In 2016 the Making Waves Short Film Competition attracted over 150 entries from across the world.
The competition was judged by three British industry experts led by Emmy award winning documentary producer and director Tony Steyger whose work includes BBC’s series Video Diaries. He was the inspiration behind the BBC’s Mass Observation series Video Nation, the camcorder anthropology of everyday life. Tony extended the emerging ‘first person’ documentary genre with Michelle’s Story for BBC1’s Comic Relief season in 1995, winning an RTS award. In 2014 he won a Learning on Screen award (BUFVC) for his campaigning documentary The Last Taboo.
Other judges were Dominque Young, formerly a Senior Producer based in Al Jazeera English’s bureau in London and Steve McDonnell an award winning current affairs documentary who has spent 30 years working for ITV, the BBC and C5. Among his awards are five from the NY Film Festival, nine from the RTS, and the ITN gold award for best in current affairs.
The shortlisted films will be screened in October at a Galla Event at The Wedgewood Rooms.
Judges, International partners and distrubution partners will be revealed at a later date.
